The Passage

This was a short hop to another part of Charleston Bay. Austin was the captain, Patti raised the anchor. Other crew on board was Clara.

Anchoring Conditions

  • Depth: 15
  • Bottom Material: Mud
  • Anchor Set: good
  • Holding: good until 8/22, it dragged
  • Swell/Fetch: fetch was constant
  • Notes:

Things of Note

Our anchor held great for several days. On 8/22, it dragged, not sure why as there was no wind, etc. We tried to anchor 3 additional times, and it held the last time, but something was under our boat because it went instantly from 10 ft to 0 ft. Our windlass was overheating at this point, so we had to wait for it to cool down before using it again. When it cooled down, we moved one final time and it held through a wind & lightening storm.

While at Anchor

8/16 Patti went to town to pick out a sail bag for free from the sail we brought them. We drove out dinghy right up to the USS Yorktown. We played Flip 7 with Ego Domi and Patti dropped the cards in the water.

8/17 We toured Shem Creek & Mount Pleasant OBX filming sites, including Kildare Pharmacy, the Police station & Kiara’s house.

8/18 We saw a decommissioned submarine being towed to a new location. We went to the Wreck (another OBX filming location) for dessert and were very disappointed. Patti went to Fire for lunch with Heather, Kevin, Sandra, Cade & Teagan.

8/19 We went to Charleston with Ego Domi & Windfall and took the free busses. We went to the postal museum, the oldest church in Charleston (Austin thought it was pretty cool that he sat in the pew where George Washington sat), City Hall & the Historical Society museum. That night we had our buddy boats to our boat for a taco bar for Chloe’s birthday.

8/20 Patti, Clara & Heather went to Kudo to work on computers and get out of the heat (especially for Clara). For dinner, the adults went to Red’s Ice House on Shem Creek. We said good bye to Windfall as they are heading out early in the morning.

8/21 Patti tried her hand at making yogurt. It turned out pretty good.

8/22 Austin & Patti’s 29th Anniversary! Our anchor slipped and we had to move 4 times before we were comfortable (see above). Windstorm came up and then a lightening storm after that, so we ate dinner on our boat to be safe. Ego Dome got a proximal lightening hit, ended up with a lot of damage to their electrical. We lost power on one thing that we have to replace (that we’ve found so far)

8/23 We were going to leave and head south, but now we need a new plan due to lightening strike. Austin spent the day diagnosing with Kevin. Moved back to Safe Harbor.
